Born in Tokyo, Takashi Sakamoto was influenced by childhood experiences in Japan, Burma, the United States, Bolivia and Canada. Takashi-San works with many materials –bronze, marble, granite, gems and precious stones, rare metals and wood.
While studying sculpture at Ontario College of Art, where he graduated with Honours in 1977, Takashi began to rediscover the art of inlaying precious metal metals, such as gold and silver, into bronze. This highly specialized metal art form reached a technical and aesthetic apex with ancient civilizations such as the Japanese (sword fittings), the Chinese (bronze), the Egyptian and Scythian (gold works).
As a child he was drawn to this timeless beauty of their rich and powerful metalwork. Through painstaking years of research, intense study and exploration, this ancient metal art was resurrected to innovative and exciting artistic levels by the artist. Today, his rare, exquisite and one of a kind works of art are a treasure for all and for future generations.
Takashi Sakamoto is an artist based in Prince Edward County, Canada since 1991.
