Our Donald Stephenson Jones fonds consists of his collection of documentation covering his career as an RCN officer. Included are his early training, including his course notes; his engineering career; his involvement with aviation in HMCS Bonaventure; his involvement in surface skimming vessels; and more.

Donald Jones entered the Royal Canadian Navy at RCNC Royal Roads when it opened in September 1942, promoted Midshipman (Engineering) June 1943, attended Royal Naval Engineering College (Keyham and Manadon) starting August that year and served in HMS Rodney, Loch Lomond, Birmingham and Diadem. He was promoted Lieutenant (Engineering) in November 1947, then attended RNAS Yeovilton resulting in adding aero-engineering to his qualifications as Lt(E)(A/E) and served in HMS Siskin, Daedalus, Thunderer and Ariel. He returned to NAS, Dartmouth in Canada in 1949, and was involved with the cold weather trials at RCAF Edmonton 1949-1951. He served in Stadacona (1951) where he was involved in the drafting of engineering branch personnel to ships and establishments, then in Quebec (1952) in the engineering department (as a lieutenant, he would have been a watchkeeping officer.) He was promoted LCdr(E)(A/E) in March 1954; a series of aero-engineering, personnel, staff and engineering sea appointments followed, including one as Engineering 0fficer in HMCS Iroquois on her last Korean War tour.

A posting to Bytown covered attending RCAF Staff College in Toronto, and his role as DG Ships' Project Officer in building HMCS Provider. Promoted to Commander in January 1962, he served as Assistant Director Fleet Maintenance (Re-fit and Repairs) at Naval Headquarters effective August 27; then as Cdr(E) Engineering Officer in HMCS Bonaventure in 1967, and and in 1969 headed up NDHQ (Directorate of Marine and Electrical Engineering-2), most probably covering advanced concepts.

He served in Canadian Defence Liaison Staff, Washington, in Vietnam with the International Commission of Control and Supervision (1973), and Assistant to Director General of Maritime Engineering Maintnenace.

He retired in 1974 and spent 4 years as an Engineering Procurement Officer in the Department of Supply and Services before returning to the Directorate of Marine and Electrical Engineering in 1978, where he was employed in the Propulsion Systems Section in NDHQ, Ottawa. He was a registered as P.Eng Ontario, C.Eng U.K. and was a member of the Institute Mechanical Engineers, the Canadian Society of Marine Engineers, the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering and the Engineering Institute Canada.
