Frank Frederick Stockwell entered the Boys Training Ship Formidable in the UK in 1935, becoming a Boy Seaman the following year. He served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve throughout WWII and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant. He then immigrated to Canada in 1947, served in the mercahant navy until 1964. He then joined the Naval Reserve (Cadet Instructor List) as a Cadet Officer in 1964 or 1965, and was commissioned in 1968. In 1970 he was made HMCS Haida’s commander (she was then owned by the Ontario government and was berthed at Ontario Place) in 1968 and it was largely through his efforts and perseverance that the ship was outfitted properly in order to become a Sea Cadet training facility. He was invested Order of Military Merit on 23 November 1977. He continued his command of HMCS Haida intil his retirement as (Lieutenant-)Commander in 1986.
Our Frank F. Stockwell fonds consists of his collection of documents, notes, photographs and other memorabilia, mostly relating to his command of HMCS Haida after she had been decommissioned from active service.
