The Mauthe Collection
This collection was assembled by the late Gary Mauthe, an avocational maritime historian, and was accessioned by us in December 2006. It comprises some six linear feet of folders, files, etc, mostly manuscript documents, relating to 19th century (some early 20th) shipping on the Great Lakes. Primary areas of interest are Customs House documentation, insurance and legal matters, shipping losses and the relationship of shipping with rail terminals in Great Lakes ports. There is extensive reference to the work of Willis Metcalfe (maritime historian, Prince Edward County and author, inter alia, of Canvas and Steam on Quinte Waters and Marine Memories, and limited correspondence with C.H.J. Snider, author of the weekly Schooner Days articles in the Toronto Evening Telegram.
Many of these documents are fragile requiring special handling, and are kept in our rare book room (second floor.) Loose leaf folders, mostly photostat copies of various 19th century shipping lists and registers are not yet indexed; a brief index of the remainder of this fonds is below.
