The history of Sailing World magazine starting in 1962 is long and complex, but can be summarized as:
- One-Design Yachtsman (1962–June 1965) -- Launched January 1962, strictly focused on small, standardized single-design racing boats. It was was founded by Knowles Pittman, who was the first editor. Bruce Kirby took over as the editor in the mid 1960s
- Continued by One-Design & Offshore Yachtsman (July 1965–1975) -- slight expansion of editorial focus
- Continued by Yacht Racing (1975–1977) -- The magazine was sold by Knowles Pittman and moved to Connecticut. It shortened its title, and broadened its scope to include new, larger offshore racing circuits. Major Hall became editor and Mark Smith took over visual design -- ISSN 0147-2968
- Continued by Yacht Racing/Cruising (1978–Sept 1983) -- Rebranded to capture the expanding market of performance cruising sailors -- ISSN 0190-7956
- Continued by Yacht Racing & Cruising (Oct 1983–1986) -- slight title punctuation change (replacing the slash with an ampersand) -- ISSN 0190-7956
- Continued by Sailing World (1987 – Winter 2025/2026 issue) -- modern title for the publication -- ISSN 0889-4094
- Current owner, Firecrown, transitioned to a fully digital platform -- digital ISSN unknown
