Ropner Shipping Company

Founded 1874 by Sir Robert Ropner in West Hartlepool. In 1888 Ropner bought a shipyard at Stockton-on-Tees from its previous owners Matthew Pearse and Co. By 1914, the company was listed as Ropner and Sons, of Hunter's Lane, Stockton. In 1919 A. Mitchelson and Co acquired a controlling interest in the yard, but Robert Ropner and Leonard Ropner were associated with the business; that same year the company entered into voluntary liquidation. Reorganized as shipbuilders and owners, it continued untl 1931 when the yard closed for good. As, inter alia, shipowners, it continued under names such as Sir R. Ropner and Co. and Ropner Holdings. It spun off Ropner Insurance Services Limited who have operated as an established Lloyds of London Insurance Broker since 1969. In 1997, the company was taken over by Jacobs Holdings Plc. The focus thereafter was more on ship management than direct ownership. The company currently manages the Dart Line fleet of Ro Ro vessels. This list includes ships both owned and/or built by Ropner.
