MARAD-Supported Shipbuilding

After World War II, responsibility for the Government's support for the shipbuilding industry passed from the Maritime Commission to the Maritime Administration (MARAD). From the perspective of the shipbuilders, this essentially meant implementation of Title V of the Merchant Marine Act, which provided for Construction Differential Subsidy, or CDS. The program started in 1951, with the 35-ship Mariner program and came to an abrupt halt in 1981, when the Reagan Administration killed it. In the course of that 30-year period, 340 ships were built. In the table below, the first seven ships are those that were initiated by the Maritime Commission before they handed over to MARAD. In addition, there are 19 ships that were built for other government agencies - primarily N.O.A.A. - under Title VII of the Act.
