Othe pre-WWII shipbuilders in Port Jefferson NY

Apart from the Bayles shipyard, there were four other yards building ships in Port Jefferson when the Civil War ended in 1865: the output of these yards is summarized here. All four were on the waterfront in downtown Port Jefferson: the Mather shipyard was in the center of the harbor, immediately west of the ferry terminal; the Jones shipyard was on the pond, on the west side of Jones Street (now Main Street); the Harris shipyard was on the west side of the harbor, where Miller Marine and the northern end of the public dock are today; and the Darling shipyard was at the extreme north end of the west side of the harbor: it was started in about 1832 by Sylvester Smith and Matthew Darling. The Harris shipyard was on the west side of the harbor, where Miller Marine and the public dock are today. It was originally developed in 1842, by Sylvester Smith, and later acquired by J. J. Harris, who operated it for at least 20 years, before selling it for conversion into the Yacht Basin. The table below lists the ships that were built by these four yards during and after the Civil War. The Jones shipyard was on the pond just west of Main Street and south of Broadway. It was developed by William Luther Jones in 1832, at the same time as he developed what would become the Mather & Wood yard, just to the north. Jones was joined by John R. Mather in 1838 and Mather's sons took over after Jones and Mather retired. The Mather Shipyard was in the center of the port, immediately to the west of the ferry terminal: it was developed by William Luther Jones in 1832. Jones was later joined by John R. Mather, whose sons took over after Jones and Mather retired. Then, in 1879, John T. Mather teamed up with Owen E. Wood, who had been working for Emmett B. Darling. Wood left in 1903 and John T. Mather had sole control until 1909, when he sold the business to the Andrew Radel Oyster Company. In addition, a supplementary section lists ships from this period for which the builder is not known.
