Cargill Shipyard, Port Savage MN
Cargill had created a small shipyard alongside its grain elevators on the Hudson River, in Albany NY, to build an articulated barge, a concept that was quite a bit ahead of its time: this makeshift yard then built a 12,500-ton tanker. At the Navy's urging, Cargill then built a second yard just for the war effort: this yard was 14 miles from the Mississippi, cost $1,000,000 and at its peak it employed 3,500 people.
