Grant Smith and Andrew Porter started the Grant Smith-Porter Ship Company in 1917 and by mid-1918 had 6000 employees in two yards - Andrew Petersen's shipyard in Aberdeen WA and a new yard in Portland OR. The Aberdeen yard was at 4th Avenue and B Street, where the Robert Gray Elementary School is today: see the site from the air on Google here.
