Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock, Baltimore MD

In 1920, Globe Shipbuilding Company, of Superior WI, relocated to Baltimore and opened a new yard, called Globe Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company of Maryland. This business closed in 1922, however, after building only two ships and experiencing the bankruptcy of a client for whom they were converting five Hog Islanders into tankers. A new company, Maryland Drydock, took over the yard in April 1922 and it operated under this name until 1957, when it became Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. The company was primarily a repair yard which also did major conversions and reconstructions and only limited new construction. Koppers Company, of Pittsburgh, bought the business in the mid-1930s. Fruehauf Corp. bought it in 1968 and closed it in 1984: it's been a car terminal ever since. The yard was located in the Fairfield section of Baltimore, immediately to the west of Childs Street, adjoining the site that would become the huge Bethlehem-Fairfield yard in WWII. See it from the air on Google here. If anyone can add to the table below, please email info@navalmarinearchive.com.
