Tampa Shipbuilding (TASCO), tampa FL
Tampa Shipbuilding was originally known as Tampa Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, founded in 1917. This company took over the existing facility of Tampa Foundry & Machine Co., which had been started in 1892, incorporated in 1905, and which had got into shipbuilding with the award of the contract for the passenger ship Poughkeepsie in 1916. It only built two ships for the WWI effort however and operated as a repair yard until the eve of WWII, when it was one of the yards selected for the U.S. Maritime Commission's pre-war long-range shipbuilding program. Shortly after starting work on its initial contract, however, it got into financial difficulties and was sold to George B. Howell, who renamed it Tampa Shipbuilding Company, or TASCO. At its peak, the yard employed 16,000 people and was the largest employer in Tampa. The company pursued commercial work after the war but ceased operations by 1948. The site was initially turned over to the Navy and was held in reserve until after the Korean War. It was then turned over to the Port of Tampa who developed it for other uses and it is now occupied by Gulf Marine Repair, at the foot of Grant Street, on the Ybor Channel: see it from the air on Google here.
