Toche Brothers Boat Works, Biloxi and Ocean Springs MS

(later Toche Boat Builders, Toche Enterprises, Vickers Industries, Coastal Shipbuilding, Sea-Trac Industries, Toche Marine and Michael Toche Boats)

There have been several boat building companies in Biloxi and Ocean Springs that involved members of the Toche family. The first, Toche Brothers Boat Works, was started in Biloxi in the 1930s. It became Toche Boat Builders in 1940 and moved to Ocean Springs in 1955: see it from the air on Google here. It was later renamed Toche Enterprises but failed in 1975 and was sold, first, to Jimmy Vickers of Vickers Industries and then, in 1978, to Coastal Shipbuilding, which failed in 1984, with the industry-wide collapse in the market. Meanwhile, in 1976, Joseph Adaulph Toche Sr., started another Biloxi operation, called Sea Trac Industries, but this failed in 1982. (Incidentally, Joseph Adaulph Toche Sr. was employed by Frank Patti in 1977 to establish Patti Shipyard in Pensacola FL. He and his son-in-law, James Albert Parker, Sr., designed, laid out and supervised the construction of vessels at Patti Shipyard from 1977 through March 31, 1994. Joseph's sons Sidney John and Joseph Jr. (Bubba), and his son-in-law Elwood Joseph Landry were also employed by Patti.) Also in 1977, John Anthony Toche started a third yard in Biloxi, on Back Bay: this one, called Toche Marine, also closed in 1982. Thirteen years later, when the market finally recovered, John Anthony Toche reactivated the Ocean Springs yard as Toche Marine, Inc., but this closed in 1999. Finally, the next generation of the family reactivated the yard again in 2002 as Michael Toche Boats and began building 220' barges and 52' push boats for the Corps of Engineers: the yard closed again as a result of the damage done by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
