Coastal Patrol Ships Built Since WWII (PCE, PCH, PGH, PHM, PC)

After WWII, most of the Navy's huge fleet of coastal patrol ships (formerly known as sub chasers) was transferred to other navies and coast guards: within only a few years, however, it became apparent that more were needed and a new program was funded, producing 44 corvette-sized anti-submarine warfare ships, 30 of which were built in foreign shipyards. In the 1960s, the surface-effect ship was developed and the Navy started investigating the application of this technology to patrol ships, building several prototypes and then a class of six PHMs: these were not a great success, however, and the follow-on program reverted to a proven monohull design from the U.K. This design was supposed to be a large patrol craft but the Navy reconfigured it as a small patrol ship, with the result that it was larger and more expensive than had been planned, and only 14 were built.
