Freight Barges (YF, YFN, YFR, YFRN) Built or Acquired During WWII
Over the years, the Navy has built or acquired 1,289 freight barges: the table below lists the 897 that were built or acquired during WWII. In theory, the YFs and YFRs were self-propelled, while the YFNs and YFRNs were not, but, in practice, there are many that carry the wrong designation. The YFRTs (range tenders) are included here because they have numbers in the YF series, rather than in a series of their own. Although almost every barge has been identified, there are still a few gaps in the data: in particular, it is not clear what happened to many of these barges at the end of WWII.
