Yard Tugs (YT, YTB, YTM, YTL) Built or Acquired Before WWII

Yard tugs were initially called harbor tugs and later district harbor tugs. The designation YT was introduced in 1920 and tugs in service at that time were then assigned YT numbers, although not according to any system that I can see. Some of the smaller tugs built at Mare Island (#s 86 thru 101), were originally called Motor Tugs and later designated YMTs. In addition to the numbered tugs listed here, there must have been many more that were disposed of before 1920, but documenting them must be a project for another year. Complicating this task further, many YTs were later reclassified as YTB (Big), YTM (Medium) or YTL (Little): YTBs were supposed to be >800 hp, YTMs <800 but >400 hp and YTLs <400 hp. Some were reclassified more than once and the records of which were and which weren't are very confusing. If anyone can add to or otherwise improve the accuracy of this table, please email info@navalmarinearchive.com.
