12. Daily News (Kingston) Dec 4, 1872 p.1 The following vessels are laid up for the winter at Picton Harbour and are being dismantled. Steamers PICTON, NORFOLK. Schooners BABINEAU & GAUDRY, C. GEARING, PICTON, J.W. LANGMUIR, BELLE CASE, BELLE of Hamilton, ONTARIO. The new vessel being built at Mr. Redmond’s shipyard during the summer for W. Ross & Co. was launched on Wednesday last and christened the FLORA EMMA. She is a well-built craft and has a carrying capacity of 9,000 bushels. The schooner SARAH BOND will be put on the ways at once preparatory to being rebuilt. In addition to this it is the intention of the shipbuilders to lay the keel of another vessel which will be pushed forward without delay. (Picton Gazette).

44. DISMASTED, July 16, 1881, Cleveland Herald, July 20th, 1881. Port Hope, July 16th: A squall struck the schooner FLORA EMMA, of Oshawa, while off here boating up the lake this afternoon, carrying away both masts and jibboom. The tug A. WRIGHT went to her assistance and towed her here this evening.

GENERAL NOTES

44. Cleveland Herald July 21st. 1881 It will cost about $1,000 to repair the damage done to the schooner FLORA EMMA during the gale last Saturday near Port Hope.
45. British Whig July 19, 1881 p.3 CHARMED LIVES. On Saturday the FLORA EMMA was on her way from Oswego to Oshawa with about 360 tons of coal on board. When she was abreast of Port Britain and working up the lake, a gust of wind struck her taking off her jib-boom and straining the hook of the block till it was almost straightened. The top masts were next to go, then the mainmast and the foremast below the trestle trees, all over the starboard side bringing down the rigging to the deck with a run. The mainsail was split in two. It was simply a marvel how crew escaped with their lives in such a crash, large spars falling over seventy feet, and bringing with them the heavy iron wire shrouds, blocks and tackles. The men were all on the deck, and yet not one received even a scratch. The damage is estimated at from $800 to $1,000; fully covered by insurance.
46. Oswego Palladium Wed July 20, 1881. FLORA EMMA DISMASTED. The dismasting of the FLORA EMMA off Port Britain is thus described:- The squall carried out the jibboom first, then the foretopmast, followed quickly by the foremast head, the maintopmast, the mainmast head ropes, everything coming tumbling down and leaving portions of the mainmast completely bare. The jib topsail had been furled and the sailors were just hauling in the gaff topsail when the gale struck the vessel. As the wind was blowing north by north-west, the vessel drifted down the lake until the Port Hope tug went out to the rescue of the crew, when the wreck was brought into Port Hope harbour. It will cost about $1,000 to repair the damage. A complete set of new masts will have to be put in. The damage was covered by insurance.
47. British Whig Aug 5, 1881 p.2 Marine Notes. The work on the schooner FLORA EMMA, at Port Hope, is rapidly pushed forward. The masts have been put in and the wire rigging was added yesterday. She is receiving a through overhauling. The loss of her sails will delay her getting away as soon as expected.
48. British Whig Dec 10, 1881 p.3 VESSELS LAID-UP, CONSECON. Schooner FLORA EMMA of Picton, loaded with barley, owned in Oshawa. Picton is the sixth largest port for the registration of shipping in the Province of Ontario, the register showing forty one sailing vessels and six steamers, with a net tonnage of 5,137.

53. British Whig Oct 23, 1882 p.3 Marine News. The schr SYLVESTER NEELON will load barley at South Bay and Picton for Chicago at 6 cents. The rate on barley from Port Hope to Oswego is 2-1/2 cents, an advance of ½ cent. The vessels trading here should demand and have the same rate. The FLORA EMMA got in on peas to Kingston from Port Hope. The captain of the schr FLORA EMMA reports that the vessel did some quick work this season. He delivered four cargoes of barley at Oswego from Port Hope in six days. The vessel’s capacity is about 8,000 bushels. Who can eclipse this service? If he could get what he paid for it, he would move to Kingston for he thinks it’s a healthy place to live. He has followed the water forty- four years and has been thirty years a captain. He says the marine business is not what it used to be. When he started sailing, the owners of vessels were able to get rich in a comparatively short time. Twenty years ago the freight prices were double what they are now. They used to get 65 to 75 cents per ton for carrying coal and now it is reduced to 30 cents. The consequence is vessels have to go half-manned and money is not circulated as freely by mariners as in olden days. The freight on coal between Oswego and Kingston should be at least 40 cents. Then the masters of vessels could keep a full crew and lay by money. There is not much prospect in getting this price advance except when the season gets late and the coal has to be got over at any price.

129. British Whig July 27, 1893 p.4 Marine Intelligence. Capt. T. Fox, of the schooner FLORA EMMA says the present has been the best season he has ever had trading here. The schooner has carried sixteen loads already this year, one of lumber and fifteen of coal. The prospects are not very promising for the balance of the season, however. The coal sheds at Kingston are now all filled and vessels will have to find other ports. With the exception of a few loads of screenings there is nothing more to come here. The screenings are scarce and will not be secured before next month. Capt. Fox unloaded four times and two weeks and two days out of which he laid over the Queen’s birthday. The captain is a true British subject and will not work on her Majesty’s birthday.
130. British Whig July 28, 1893 Marine Intelligence. The schr FLORA EMMA, Capt. Fox, cleared light for Port Hope last evening. She has no charters ahead and will be repaired.

132. Buffalo Enquirer, November 16, 1893 Oswego, Nov 16th: The schooner FLORA EMMA, Capt. Thomas Fox, of Port Hope, Ont, with 144,000 feet of lumber, broke from her moorings in the outer harbour during the terrible gale last night and went ashore near the shore end of the east breakwater. The crew were rescued by the lifesavers. The tug ELZA J. REDFORD went out into the storm to save a vessel. She laboured heavily, burst a steam pipe and drifted helplessly ashore alongside the schooner. Capt. Featherstonhaugh of the tug was washed overboard and drowned. Both tug and vessel are a total loss.
133. British Whig. November 16, 1893. DISASTER at OSWEGO Mariners at this port were indeed sorry to hear of the FLORA EMMA disaster. Capt. Fox was as well known in Kingston as in his own town of Port Hope and everyone has a good word for him. The EMMA was built in Picton in 1872 by a man named Redmond. She is a two- master fore and after and has a registered tonnage in the custom house of 151 tons. She will carry nigh 300 tons of coal, however. The vessel was in size, similar to the schr FLEETWING. She has been trading for Swift & Co. all summer. Her cargo of lumber was no doubt from Deseronto. The gale must have been furious at Oswego. Mariners had a fear here and watchmen were at their posts during the entire night. The captain of the tug REDFORD is well-known to mariners trading with that port. He was a whole-souled man.
134. British Whig Nov 18, 1893 p.4 Marine Intelligence. Capt. Fox, by the loss of the schooner FLORA EMMA is almost penniless. With the vessel, manned entirely by members of his family, he made his living. He has no insurance. A subscription has been started in Oswego to help him out.
135. British Whig Nov 21, 1893 p.1 Marine Intelligence. The schooner FLORA EMMA, wrecked at Oswego, is fast breaking up in the heavy seas.
136. British Whig Nov 22, 1893 p.1 Marine Intelligence. The Standard Oil Company contributed $500 towards the fund being raised in Oswego for Capt. Fox of the wrecked schooner FLORA EMMA.
137. Daily British Whig April 2, 1894 p.1 Marine Intelligence. Capt. Fox, who for so many years was in the schooner FLORA EMMA is negotiating for a half-interest in the schooner F.H. BURTON, now lying at Port Hope.
138. British Whig Nov 15, p.2 1905 A SAD REMEMBERANCE. November 15th, is the twelfth anniversary of the wreck of the schooner FLORA EMMA and the tug ELIZA J. REDFORD in which disaster Captain Featherstonhaugh lost his life.
