Pineaud Yachts, Baddeck NS

Martin Pinaud (1852-1907) started building yachts in Charlottetown PE as early as 1901 after a career as a fisherman. He and two of his sons, Walter (1885-1968) and John (Jack) Pinaud (1881- ), also built for the local yacht club members in Westmount NS and possibly in Boston MA, (where Jack had trained at the George F. Lawley Yards.) The family worked with George H. Duggan, Commodore of the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club, 1905-10, on a number of projects. They formed Baddeck Boats in Baddeck NS in 1928, under the leadership of Walter Pinaud, who had been the long-time manager of Alexander Graham Bell's experimental boatyard there.  Walter's sons, Ralph and Fred assisted their father until his death in 1968. (As an aside, Jack Pineaud left the family business sometime around 1912 to work with John G. Alden.) The yard was operated as Pinaud's Yacht Yard Ltd from 17 Jan 1961 to 15 Nov 1984, and continued operating as Cape Breton Boatyard.
