Minesweepers, Part 4 : Base Minesweepers (AMb) Acquired in WWII

Minesweepers : Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 (this page), Part 5

During WWII, 22 wooden-hulled fishing vessels were acquired and reconfigured as Base Minesweepers, (AMb), even smaller than the coastal minesweepers, (AMc) and yard minesweepers, (YMS). This was not considered a success, however, and on May 1, 1942, less than a year later, they were reconfigured again, this time as yard patrol craft, (YP). This too was not successful and most of these boats were disposed of before the war was over. Comments or queries, please email info@navalmarinearchive.com.
