This second edition of Strategic Air Command updates Polmar's earlier history of the United States Air Force's development, after Word War II, of a deterrent force of strategic and long-range bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Based on the official SAC history, this edition introducees B-1B and B-2 bombers, reconnassaiassance aircraft and the Midgetman.

This is a brief survey of the history of aerial warfare, with most of the covergae on air operations in World War I, with considerably less attention given to the much larger World War II air operations and the air wars in Korea and Vietnam, and ends with only a brief mention of the single greatest component of airpower for almost five decades – the Strategic Air Command.
